Reviews for Certamus Volare

An Inspiring Journey of Service, Courage, and Dedication I just finished Certamus Volare by Phil Heseltine, and I have to say—this is one of the most engaging and heartfelt military memoirs I've read in years. As a retired Air Force Colonel who served over three decades, Heseltine brings an authentic, no-nonsense voice to his story that immediately draws you in.The title, Latin for "We strive to fly," perfectly captures the spirit of the book: a globe-trotting adventure filled with high-stakes missions, leadership challenges, and the day-to-day realities of life as a career airman. From his time as a KC-135R instructor pilot to high-level staff roles (including speechwriting for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs), Heseltine shares vivid, behind-the-scenes accounts that make you feel like you're right there in the cockpit or briefing room with him. What sets this book apart is the balance—it's not just operational war stories (though those are gripping). He weaves in personal reflections on family, sacrifice, camaraderie, and the personal growth that comes from decades of service. The writing is straightforward yet compelling, with just the right amount of humor and humility to keep it relatable and human.Whether you're a veteran, an aviation enthusiast, someone interested in military history, or just love a well-told life story, Certamus Volare delivers. It's inspiring without being preachy, detailed without being dry, and ultimately a tribute to the men and women who serve. Highly recommended—easily 5 stars. I'll be keeping this one on my shelf and recommending it to friends. Thank you, Col. Heseltine, for sharing your remarkable journey!

The aviation experiences shared from around the world and the unique responsibilities they carry are reflected powerfully in this book. Certamus Volare is an inspiration to the next generation of pilots.

Some books pull us into the story and then touch us forever. Certamus Volare is one such book. I laughed at Phil Heseltine’s story about driving with windows stuck down and a headliner draped about his head. I cheered when WWII Purple Heart recipient Captain Swetnam’s sterling silver wings were pinned on Phil’s uniform. I cringed at each short-notice Air Force assignment. And, I smiled proudly at the action-packed stories of brave Americans serving our nation. Yes, Certamus Volare has touched me forever.
Col Cathy C. McClain, USAF (Ret.)

Col Phil Heseltine is an accomplished airman, writer, and American patriot. Our paths first crossed in the office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2008 when Phil was selected as the speechwriter for Admiral Mike Mullen. This was no easy task, considering the Chairman’s withering schedule of public events and high demand signal for personal appearances. Admiral Mullen rarely said no and this made Phil’s job even more challenging. It is one thing to understand how your boss thinks and quite another to have his voice. Phil did both with aplomb. It’s a great book and a must read for anyone wondering what it’s like to dedicate yourself to a life of service. Well worth your time!

Listen, I don't usually spend my time reading about aircraft that have a "max takeoff weight" heavier than my ego, but when Phil Heseltine—a man I’ve known since he was a "Gas Passing" legend at Mcconnell—puts pen to paper, I pay attention.
Phil’s book is a love letter to the crews who fuel the fight at 25,000 feet, and it’s about time someone told their story with this much heart. It’s 5 stars from the world’s greatest fighter pilot. Read it, then go find a tanker pilot and buy them a beer. They’re the reason I always made it home for dinner.

Certamus Volare provides a very real and sometimes raw glimpse into the life of an American Airman.  Colonel (retired) Phil Heseltine walks you through his life from Air Force brat to the leader of a combat Wing flying some of the newest aircraft in the Air Force inventory.  He provides a virtual checklist for leaders in any field through a subtle, “I learned this when” narrative filled with the self-deprecating humor and insight that anyone that has worked for or with him would immediately recognize.  This book is a must read.
Maj Gen Pete Fesler, USAF (Ret.)

CERTAMUS VOLARE isn’t just a compelling account of Colonel Heseltine’s exemplary experience in the United States Air Force, it’s a record of a life dedicated to God, Country, family and service. Extremely interesting and instructive, written in an engaging and conversational style, it provides unique insight and details into the personal character, challenges, and commitment of a career officer flying some of our military’s most sophisticated and demanding aircraft. The book recounts exciting, often humorous, sometimes harrowing, and always enlightening anecdotes of Colonel Heseltine’s memorable experiences and command assignments. It renewed my appreciation for the exceptional training and performance of America’s military.

The Phil Heseltine I know and admire is a fantastic cohort and teammate/Shipmate!  Ever kind, professional, unassuming, curious, and thorough, Phil’s skill at articulating human interest stories and honoring down-to-earth hard work helped our principal (the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) connect with and thank thousands of Servicemembers and their families, the community that supported them, and the statesmen, partners, and allies the U.S. interacted with during a tenuous, challenging time for our Nation.
Phil has a particularly endearing brand of humor that is as welcoming and sincere as it is playful and cheerful.  As he demonstrated when we wrote for Admiral Mullen, one will find when reading Certamus Volare, Phil Heseltine thoughtfully reflects on his roots and celebrates unsung, everyday heroes with gratitude and grace.
With a big smile and an even bigger heart, a more devoted son, father, husband, friend, or Airman than Phil Heseltine you would be hard pressed to find.  I am honored to have served with him and would gladly go to war or have a beer with him anytime.
CAPT Linda C. Seymour, USN (Ret.)

Phil Heseltine's Certamus Volare is a genuine, inspiring reflection on a life of dedicated Air Force service—from the cockpit of the Mighty KC-135 to the high-stakes world of the Joint Staff. As a longtime friend, Pentagon teammate, and fellow speechwriter, I was there to witness Phil's legendary 'Vote for Pedro' effect he provided Admiral Mullen. What could have been a routine event became a masterclass in timing, humor, and connection—earning genuine laughter and lasting rapport from the Chairman himself. Phil's memoir captures that same authentic spirit: the struggles that build character, the faith and mentorship that sustain us, and the stories that heal and unite generations of Airmen. It's essential reading for anyone who has worn the uniform or supports those who do.”
Col Tim Kirk, USAF (Ret.)

I’m not a pilot, but I am a leader who has a craving for freedom. I love counting each epoch in my life and career as a brush stroke in the art of my whole adventure. Reading Certamus Volare made me feel like a brother from another mother with the author. The way he paints word pictures wakes up every fiber of my being which, in one way or another, has gotta fly.

In reading Phil’s memoir, I was impressed by the raw honesty of his tenacious path to ultimately end up a successful officer and Wing Commander. Fly along with him as he describes the ups and downs of his career, and you enjoy both humorous and serious anecdotes of the events and people that forged his character into that of a true leader and continuing example for young officers and airmen to emulate. The dedication, separation, and sacrifice that Phil and his family endured in serving the Nation are inspirational and serve as an example to others. Enjoy reading Certamus Volare. I certainly did.

Certamus Volare Is a fascinating and insightful journey into growing up in a military family and later becoming an Air Force pilot! Phil shares great stories of the challenges of military life and leadership! His experiences commanding both active duty and reserve airmen are unmatched!
Maj Gen Randall Ogden, USAF (Ret.)

Father Jean-Baptiste Lacordaire described the vocation of a soldier as next in dignity to the priesthood because it calls the soldier to a spirit and intention of sacrifice. Phil recounts the embodiment of this sacrifice military members confront to serve our nation in war, and peace, through his story. He pulls on the common thread of shared sacrifice and support with family, friends, and fellow service members over an amazing career. Phil's "struggle to fly" isn't about an individual act of success, but an inspirational team effort leading to success over the course of a lifetime while catalyzing the success of many others. We the People must embrace and impress this message upon rising generations to ensure the continued endowment of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Col. Terence McGee, USAF (Ret.)

Only about 1% of Americans are currently serving in the military but those serving have broad support from our fellow citizens. We frequently receive heartfelt appreciation in the words, "Thank you for your service." Beyond the headlines capturing the emotional highs and lows of combat operations, most people don't have insight on the full military life or what all "service" entails. From the time I first met him at pilot training, Phil has personified the sense of service and devotion to country that we proudly associate with the best our military profession has to offer. Certamus Volare allows the reader to understand the intersections of family, life, and a military career and how it shapes those defending our nation from the perspective of true patriot.
Col. Chris Cunniff, USAF (Ret)

Phil is the real deal … a proven leader and prolific writer who has walked the walk! Enjoy this read as he eloquently captures practical life lessons through the eyes of a leader who selflessly served our great nation!”
Jim “Vech” Vechery, USAF (Ret.)

Reading Certamus Volare reminded me why Col Heseltine was the leader I most aspired to emulate during my time in the Air Force. He was always clear about his expectations from the start and made sure you had the tools and support needed to perform your job to a high standard. At the same time, he looked after our families and our careers while we focused on the mission. That kind of leadership earned my deep respect and made me willing to go above and beyond for him.
Josh Rope

"Certamus Volare" is the captivating story of Col. Phil Heseltine's more than 30-year career in the United States Air Force. Through discipline he persevered through uncertainty during his career.  Through discipline, he became an exceptional leader, setting the standard himself and enforcing it consistently. Through discipline, Phil led by example in airmanship, professionalism, and personal conduct. Phil is a strong family man and a role model.  His story, "Certamus Volare", told with humility and humor is a must-read.
Rick Rowe
Retired Learjet Marketing Pilot

In Certamus Volare, Phil moves from the cockpit to the page with the same humility he brought to the wing. The book is not just about the technical skill of flying tankers, but the internal fortitude it takes to lead people through high-stakes transitions. He reminds us that while we all "struggle to fly," the struggle is exactly what makes the flight worth taking. For anyone seeking a leader who values the person as much as the mission, these pages offer a masterclass in what it means to lead with a whole heart.

Col Phil Heseltine was an outstanding commander who led with vision, professionalism, and genuine compassion for those entrusted to his leadership. He inspired his team to perform at their highest level while fostering a culture of trust, respect, and shared purpose. His leadership extended beyond the organization, engaging the surrounding community and strengthening relationships that enhanced mission effectiveness and public confidence. Col Heseltine’s character, judgment, and commitment to people left a lasting impact on all who served with him.
Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Pennington, USAF (Ret.)

Colonel Heseltine is an outstanding leader whose simple oft-repeated command to "wind your watch" served as a profound reminder to always consider the impact of decisions on his people first, ensuring that every action, no matter how routine or high-stakes, kept the human element at the center of leadership.
BJ Malcom

“Col H always reinforced the concept that true leadership was attained by getting to know those you work with both above, below, and even outside of your chain of command. He was an inspiration to those around him as both an individual and a leader and I am grateful for the time I worked with him in my early formative officer years. He has continued to be a mentor and a family friend, now almost 20 years later.”
Darcy A. Riggs

Certamus Volare is a special book to me as it reminds me of my son’s love for flying the KC135. He invited me to his Air Force friends including the author. So many struggled with the loss of a son or a close friend. Yet, Phil’s stories tell of the passions that flying in the service for others brings to me and the readers. Thanks for the courage to write your heart and share with others.
CAPT Phillip Cyr, USN (Ret.)

I had the privilege of working under the leadership of Col Phil Heseltine, USAF Retired, who truly embodied certamus volare, consistently elevating our team through trust, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to excellence during my time at McConnell Air Force Base. Together we navigated several complex labor issues and Priority Placement Program reviews that occasionally reached Headquarters Air Force for review, and he always backed my regulatory guidance with confidence and respect. His continued support of my career—and the way he speaks so highly of my work—has been both motivating and deeply meaningful.  Thank you for your leadership.
Nettie Webb

Wow, what an outstanding book!  A must read for anyone interested in what life was like in the Air Force at the turn of the 21st century as the nation transitioned from the Cold War era to the Global War on Terror.  9-11, changed everything! Phil does a great job of sharing his personal journey in the service and being ready to fly, fight and win. NKAWTG!! Nobody serves this country alone, and this book shines a light on what military life is like and how families and friends step up to answer the call together.
Lt. Col. Matthew Bowers, USAF (Ret.)

Phil was part of the famed 384th Squarepatchers and became a legend in his own right. He returned to the base years later at the top as the Vice Wing Commander when I was the  squadron commander of the 384th. He quickly pointed out that he brought home the tanker-styled deployment door that was still proudly displayed in our heritage room!! Once a square, always a square!

Certamus Volare is a powerful memoir of Col. Heseltine’s Air Force career, told with vivid detail that makes you feel like you’re right there beside him. His journey reflects both challenges and triumphs, capturing the passion and emotion of a life in service. What stands out most is the strong bond within the tanker community and the meaningful connections he shares. It was a true privilege to have been a Square Patcher and to have served with him “when we were young.”
Matt Calisi

My time working with retired Col. Phil Heseltine was the most rewarding time in my professional life. He truly believes in people, and I always felt like he believed in me. CertamusVolare is an accurate portrait of serving in the modern military world, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and learning more about a great leader reflecting on his experience as a person. A great commander leads from the front, and he is a great example of this philosophy.
Abigail Klein

The story ends with one of the greatest leaders I have had the pleasure of working with honorably departing the ranks of military service. It begins with relatable tales of the adversity, perseverance, and success Phil experienced in finding his way and then forging a path.
Mike Venerdi

As Phil mentions…every Airman has a story, and I’m thrilled he shared his with us!  A wonderful family man and exceptional leader, his story (so far) is a humble account of his growth and “lessons learned” that anyone, in any stage, can enjoy, relate to, and apply to their own leadership journey. Such a pleasure to read, and to see the parallels of my Air Force path with his own. I’m blessed to call him my brother in arms and friend (and fellow ASAM calculus survivor).
Tim TJ Julian

C-130 squadron commander and ASAM Lucky 13 classmate

Certamus Volare was honestly a treasure to dive into. The book is filled with wisdom and leadership lessons I witnessed serving personally with Col. Heseltine. His priorities were always on the people and he showed that by never missing a jet returning from a deployment, which occurred almost weekly for 2 years. As a sitting squadron commander of a flying squadron now, CV reminded me how much I took from his example and leadership style 16+ years ago. The story of the old number 7 valve took me right back to the jump seat as one of the co-pilots on that overseas trip. I think I ran the fuel calculations 40 times on the way back to Bangor! I was so thankful having Col. Heseltine and D-Rob in the seat showing us how to navigate a complex situation, calmly leaning on the crew to recover the aircraft. I would recommend this biography to any aviation fan for its easy to read and well told stories, but also to those looking for genuine lessons in how to lead a people-first organization.

Is it possible to thank a vet or military member if you don’t have any idea what service looks like? Yes, but read Certamus Volare and I think you’ll feel the sentiment more deeply. Join Phil and his family’s journey of tenacity & triumph, multiply by the millions that have served similarly and you’ll feel the gravity of a career spent in service.”
“When I get thanked for serving in the military most of the time I feel caught flat footed. In the moment between smiling and replying memories flash through at hyperspeed…friends, family, moves, deployments, achievement, failure, laughter, love, and loss. How can you convince the public that you couldn’t imagine doing anything else? Certamus Volare does a great job of making that case; it's Phil’s gift to those that supported and served with him. Want to understand the brief bewilderment in a vet’s eye when you thank them? Read Phil’s story and multiply by millions of others and you’ll be well on your way.”
“Before there are ever ‘boots on the ground’ in a conflict you can rest assured that there is ‘gas in the air.’ Certamus Volare is a love letter to those fueling the fight at 25,000 feet from one of most competent, compassionate, and funny leaders I had the pleasure of serving with.”
“If the airborne refueling force were a social media post I guarantee the entirety of the Armed Forces would ‘smash that like button!’ You know what else they’d like? This book. Certamus Volare is as entertaining as it is informative. Filled with stories of a career flying and leading from one of the best I served with, Phil honors fellow vets by sharing what that looked like for him and his family.
Chris Lanier

I love what my friend of over 26 years has captured with Certamus Volare…from his “Brat” days to commanding a KC-46 Air Refueling Wing, Phil has seen it all. I spent two flying assignments with Phil and topped it off with collocated staff tours in Washington DC.  In fact, Phil gave me my last check-ride in the KC-135 before I would later move to other aircraft.  Phil and I have had many conversations over the years, and I still remember getting some great career advice before from him before he finally retired from military service.  This is great memoir and must read!
Chris Cornette

“Phil Heseltine’s Certamus Volare is a powerful reflection on the culture, character, and leadership that sustain military aviation. Throughout my career across the military, medicine, and medical administration, I have seen what true leadership looks like—and Phil Heseltine embodies it.  His leadership qualities—clear mission focus, leading by example, and mentoring those who serve alongside him—are evident throughout this book, which reflects the hard-earned insights of a lifetime of experience and service.”
Dr. Hendrikus Vanderveldt, MD, MBA, FASGE

It is a rare privilege to write of a lifelong friend whose character has matched the promise of his youth. Though time and distance carried us in different directions, my friendship with Phil Heseltine never faded. I knew his family well, admired the values instilled by his parents and grandparents, and watched those same values guide him through a remarkable life of service.
As fellow military brats, we were both shaped by movement, discipline, and the understanding that duty often comes first. My own path led me to the Army Infantry, while Phil’s took him skyward, much to my enduring and good-natured envy whenever I looked up and imagined him overhead.
Over the years I followed his career from afar. It was a career clearly defined not only by professional excellence, but by leadership, humility, and steadfast purpose. The lessons Phil learned and lived have often informed my own journey.
Reading Certamus Volare felt less like reading a memoir and more like traveling beside an old friend through the chapters of an extraordinary life. From a young boy growing up in a military family, to a determined Air Force officer, to a combat-tested aviator who retired after serving his nation with great distinction. Phil’s story is one of perseverance, faith, humor, and honor. It deserves to be read.
Bob Lindee

It has been an honor to know Phil over the past several years. His leadership and dedication to mentorship, training, and development have made a lasting impact on countless individuals. I will always appreciate the call he made to let us know that our son, Vail, had been accepted into flight school, an immensely proud moment for our son Vail and our family. Through hard work, perseverance, and the support of the commanders and enlisted leadership under Phil’s command, Vail was able to accomplish his goal of being an Air Force Aviator. Phil’s commitment extends beyond the Air Force and continues to strengthen the community through his support of future leaders. I am deeply grateful for his influence and service.

Certamus Volare offers an exceptional glimpse into both the professional achievements and personal values that defined Colonel Heseltine’s Air Force career. Through engaging and candid storytelling, he recounts experiences that are at times thrilling, humorous, and deeply meaningful. Readers gain a rare perspective on the discipline, character, and commitment required to lead and fly some of the military’s most sophisticated aircraft. This book is a testament to service, leadership, and dedication to something greater than oneself. It is an enjoyable and insightful read that reinforces appreciation for the excellence of America’s military.

Certamus Volare is the kind of book you don’t expect—and won’t forget. It’s raw, honest, and filled with moments that will make you laugh, reflect, and even tear up. Col Heseltine’s storytelling brings each experience vividly to life, making this far more than a memoir—it’s a journey you feel. A truly compelling and memorable read.

We all have people we have met in our lives who have had such an impact on us that we think…“Man, If I could be just half as good as they are I’d be amazing.”  I call these special individuals “The Handful” because most of us only have a handful of folks that rise to this special level in our hearts and minds.  Phil Heseltine is without a doubt in my “Handful”. Having had the absolute privilege to cross paths with Phil at several critical points in my military career and be able to glean from his keen wisdom and dynamic leadership has been such a blessing for both me and my family. I know some day we will all be measured by the impact we have had on those around us with the gifts and talents we have been given.  Phil is a testament to what hard work, perseverance and a genuine love for one’s fellow man can accomplish by using those talents to touch the lives of not just a “handful” of folks during his time on this Earth but most definitely a “Full Bushel” if not an entire field.  By personifying infectious patriotism, service before self and a genuine love for one’s fellow man, Phil has captured in his book Certamus Volare what it means to be a true servant-leader.  I know I am better in so many ways for getting to witness first hand such a humble, credible and approachable leader with an amazing gift of always making those around him feel valued.  Phil’s ability to so clearly and smoothly articulate his wisdom and vision, always having the right words ready that one needs to hear has truly made such a difference in so many lives.  I hope you find this book as inspiring as I have and you too are added to the “Full Bushel” of folks made better by Phil’s account of his life, his service to our Nation and his retelling of his remarkable leadership journey.

Lt. Col. Dave Pike, USAF (Ret.)

“In an immensely engaging chronology of the Air Force journey, Phil brings back memories not only I, but also countless others share of staffing, schooling, and being a Tanker Toad. So many shared names and places - this is a book of love - the jet, the mission, and most importantly the people; and wonderfully crafted so as to become an anthology of a generation seasoned by desert sand and jet fuel. My personal congratulations and thanks to Phil for capturing this so perfectly.”

Lt. Col. Michael Rambo, USAF (Ret.)

Grateful to have served with such a fervent, strong compassionate leader, mentor and friend! You are a blessing in my life and I am beholden to have served in the World's Greatest Air Force along side you. You taught me to "Shake it Off" when times got rough and it's "Easy like Sunday Morning" when powering through. Lastly, you are the definition of "More Than Meets The Eye" and I am honored to have been your Command Chief!

CMSgt Elaine 'DT1' L. Major, USAF (Ret)

Reading Certamus Volare brought back so many wonderful memories, places, and names from serving in the US Air Force together! With a refreshing and, at times, endearingly humorous style, Phil brings you along on his and his family’s journey from his youth through their years of service to our great nation and beyond — the highs, lows, good times, tough times, costs, sacrifices, adventures, uncertainty, friendships made, bonds built, and legacies left. Certamus Volare celebrates one of our country’s greatest strengths — the families who step up to serve and defend our Constitution, our freedoms, and our way of life. Well worth the read!!!’

Col. Laurel ‘Buff’ Burkel, USAF (Ret.)

What I appreciate most about this book is how Phil tells his story with both honesty and humility. He neither sugar coatsthings nor shares with us only his highlights reel.  Phil gives us the opportunity to share his accomplishments while reminding us that accomplishments are achieved through mistakes, missteps, and setbacks.  Phil relates learning the credo “FIDO” (Forget It and Drive On) early in his career.  This book is a recounting of FIDO in action.  For any Airman starting his or her career, Phil’s honest relating of his journey will be both reassuring and encouraging.  For interested civilians, Phil provides a look at how one Air Force officer accomplished something extraordinary while reminding us that Airmen are ordinary men and women.  From his work in the Pentagon to hishurricane relief in the Caribbean to his leadership in the 931st Air Refueling Wing, we catch a glimpse of what it is like to be a servant of the American people through the United States Air Force.

Dr. Arlen K. Honts

What a wonderful adventure down memory lane!

For anyone who has flown the mighty KC-135, or anyone with an interest in this remarkable Air Force mission, this is a must-read!  I have known Phil for many years but had only heard (or experienced) a few of his stories, so Certamus Volare has been a real treat for me.  This marvelous tribute to the knowledge,  skill, professionalism and absolute grit of our tanker crews and support personnel puts me right back in the cockpit as I relive those glory days.  Phil's personal accounts of people I have, or have not, known; the struggles of military moves, and the impacts on the Heseltine family - the highs and lows, pride and pain, joys and frustrations - are all detailed here and wonderfully described.

Thank you Phil for taking the time to put it all down.  Thank you Jenny, Alexa and Livie for the love and support you provided through the years on your roller coaster journey!

Col. Caroline Evernham, USAF (Ret.)

In this book, Colonel Heseltine documents his 30-year career in the United States Air Force. The title, Certamus Volare, accurately reflects his journey toward achieving his aspiration of becoming a USAF pilot.  Colonel Heseltine’s story is a deeply personal account that gives the reader a true sense of the sacrifices that our U.S. military members and their families make every day defending our country.  His writing style keeps the reader engaged and provides continuous learning throughout the text. The account highlights the complex interpersonal challenges faced by military leaders as they execute their missions. I would recommend this book for individuals interested in examining different leadership approaches and their impact on organizational outcomes.  Thank you, Colonel Heseltine, for your service to our country!

“From that first taste of flying to leading a multi-platform refueling squadron in combat over Libya—a perspective shaped by responsibility, tested by consequence, and defined by leadership under pressure.”

Fred Dohnke

Certamus Volare is a wonderfully crafted look into the commitment and dedication of not only Phil Heseltine through 30 years, but also of so many true warriors. After hearing Phil had penned a memoir, I had no doubt that I would find It to be something special. I was not wrong. He writes from the heart, and it shows in his devotion to family and mission. I am still humbled, honored and forever grateful Phil took time out of his busy schedule at the Pentagon – Round 2, to officiate my retirement from the Air Force after 26 years of service. Phil, my fellow “Square Patcher” for life, WELL DONE. N.K.A.W.T.G…N!
SMSgt David Coggin, USAF (Ret.)

Col H. Was by far one of the best commanders that I had the privilege to work for during my 27 years of military service. Certamus Volare helped me understand what shaped Phil into the outstanding husband, father, leader, and friend that we all know today! Love the Heseltines!!”

CMSgt. Dominique “Tally” Tallarida, USAF (Ret.)

“Service & Sacrifice” - a look into the life of a generational servant leader, who I had the honor to work with and for at multiple times in our careers. A great officer and true friend.

MSgt. Drew Sottovia, USAF (Ret.)

Certamus Volare is engaging, thoughtful and personal. Full of insights and great stories, this book is like a conversation with a good friend.

Ben Horst

While the exploits of fighter pilots and special operators dominate the shelves, the unique, high-stakes world of the Mobility Air Forces remains largely untold. Certamus Volare fills this void, offering a raw and revealing look at the ascent to senior military leadership. In candid and accessible prose, Phil Heseltine captures the friction of command in the post-Gulf War era, balancing the 'highs' of the mission with the personal sacrifices required to lead. It is more than a memoir; it is a masterclass in leadership for those who keep the force moving."

Brad Seehawer

“Selfless Servitude”
I first met Colonel Heseltine at an NCO Academy graduation when he was the 22 ARW/CV. From that moment, it was clear that his passion for leadership was rooted in taking care of people. Throughout my interactions with him, he has consistently demonstrated that people always come first. To me, he truly embodies the meaning of Service Before Self.

Kathy Lowman, CMSgt, USAF (Ret.)

Servicemen and women are often thanked for their "sacrifice," but what does that truly mean?  With Certamus Volare, Phil Heseltine takes the reader a personal "dollar ride" journey into the complex world of being a pilot and leader in the U.S. Air Force.  In this deeply-personal page turner, Heseltine wonderfully illustrates the heartaches, challenges, and victories that our Airmen face on a daily basis in choosing to serve this great country."

Col. Matt "Baz" Basler

It is my honor to write a few words about my friend. I have had the privilege of seeing the character behind the service—the humility, the care, and the unwavering determination that define not just an airman, but a person of principle.

The experiences shared in these pages are not simply recollections; they are reflections of a journey that many respect but few truly understand.

This book offers readers a rare window into that journey. It reminds us that service is not only measured in sorties, deployments, ranks, or medals, but in the everyday choices to lead, to endure, and to support those beside you.

To my friend—thank you for your service, your example, and your willingness to share your story. I know the words that follow will inspire reflection, gratitude, and a deeper appreciation for the men and women who dedicate themselves to serving others.

Garrett Zindel

My enjoyment reading Colonel Phil Heseltine’s riveting career narrative is surpassed only by memories of serving with him in the United States Air Force at my first assignment as a KC-135 pilot in the 384th Air Refueling Squadron “Square Patch” at McConnell AFB, KS. His memoir Certamus Volare details a fascinating USAF career in sharp, captivating prose. The reader will not be surprised to learn that writing played an important part in his journey as an officer. Certamus Volare is a must-read for any student of contemporary air power, service, and officership!

Dallan Reese

It was both an honor and a privilege to serve alongside Colonel Phil Heseltine in leading the incredible men and women of the 22nd Air Refueling Wing.  Our time there marked a significant season of modernization and transformation for McConnell Air Force Base.  Leading through change is never easy—it challenges leaders and Airmen at every level. In those moments, what matters most is a firm, steady, and approachable hand—someone dependable, accountable, and committed to the mission. That was Colonel Heseltine.

During my morning runs around McConnell, it became almost routine to see him riding his bike, putting in his miles before the day truly began. It was a small but powerful reminder of the steady leadership he brought every day. I had complete confidence that under his guidance, our team would be ready, willing, and able to usher in the Air Force’s next generation of air refueling capability with the Boeing KC-46 Pegasus.

“I had the privilege of serving alongside Phil during our Air Force careers, and the same humility, honesty, and steady leadership I saw in him then comes through clearly in Certamus Volare. This book captures the reality of a life in service, the constant effort to balance mission, leadership, and family while staying true to the values that guide us. Phil tells that story with authenticity and perspective, and anyone who has worn the uniform, or lived beside someone who has, will recognize themselves in these pages.”

Col. Matthew T. Fritz, USAF (Ret.)

Certamus Volare tells an incredible story of leadership, dedication and patriotism. Col. Phil Heseltine exemplifies what it means to serve others before self. As a dedicated airman, his rise to leading the 931st Reserve ARW is one of humility and what leading with clarity provides. You will love the way that Phil tells of life through his eyes.

Certamus Volare highlights leadership through personal accountability, resilience, and service before self—showing how Airmen lead by example even in everyday moments.  The stories emphasize that true leadership isn’t about rank, but about influence, integrity, and lifting others so the whole team can succeed.  Ultimately, the book reminds us that sharing our experiences and lessons learned helps strengthen the culture and legacy of those who follow.

My very best memories are almost all from my time in college, and all of them included my buddy Phil. We were fast friends, pretty inseparable throughout our college years. He was and still is my best friend. We left college and quickly separated in the Air Force in a time when keeping track of each other took effort. I am proud that Phil and I valued each other to do the work and have stayed close for the past 35+ years. The evolution of life is Learn, Do, Teach, Reflect. Now that I'm in the reflection phase, the importance of a solid friendship is obvious. I'm incredibly grateful for mine with Phil. I love you, buddy.

Colonel Heseltine has a unique style of pulling the reader into his experiences. Having been there along side him through some of them, it brought back great memories. I found myself back on the flight deck, whether it was a combat mission over Afghanistan or a training mission out of Altus AFB, OK. Certamus Volare is an incredible reflection of a life of service and a story very well told.

Retired Colonel Phil Heseltine's technical prowess as a pilot of KC-135s and KC-46As is matched by his emotional intelligence and soft skills as a people leader.  In a world of sterilized Facebook posts, Phil allows a transparency and vulnerability rarely found in these types of biographies, allowing us to share in his victories and at times, mistakes.  Phil provides a real look into the sacrifices made by our warfighters and their families and shares the challenges and benefits of multiple global deployments.  I would consider this a must-read for any people-leader in the military or corporate environment.
